Eventually, after five sets, Andy Murray managed to beat his fairly one dimensional Dutch opponent in the US Open second round on Friday 2nd September. However bad he may have played in the opening sets, he can now put it all behind him, and try and pick up the pieces of his (almost) shattered confidence.

Robin Haase steam-rollered to a two set lead, playing some great shots, but not altogether flawless tennis. He was heavily aided by mistakes and a lack of concentration from Murray, who couldn't seem to get any rhythm going on either his serve or forehand. But why did all these problems arise?

How did Murray make it so hard for himself?

It makes no sense for Murray to have played so appallingly in two sets, especially when he was able to come back in such a dominant fashion and win in a fairly comfortable manner. Two weeks ago he went all the way to the Masters final in Cincinnati and overturned and ailing Novak Djokovic to cap off a sensational week. His first round in New York showed some sparkling tennis as well, even when Devvarman threw the kitchen sink at him, and the fridge, kettle and microwave at that.
