The NuvaRing* is a clear, flexible, one-size (54mm diameter) fits all vaginal ring. It was developed by Organon, a division of Schering-Plough Healthcare and was approved by the FDA in 2002 and granted a licence in the UK in 2008.

How The NuvaRing Contraceptive Works

The female hormones oestrogen and a progestogen are absorbed through the vaginal wall into the bloodstream to suppress ovulation. The ring also changes the concentration of cervical mucous and the lining of the womb, making pregnancy difficult. It works in a similar way to the combined contraceptive pill rather than make its way through the liver and digestive system first, it passes through to the bloodstream quickly via the vaginal walls. The efficacy of the pill is affected if a woman has sickness or diarrhoea.
