The Courtauld Gallery is showing an exhibition entitled Look Again... Stories of the World from 10th February to 13th March 2011. The project, organised by the Education Department of the Courtald Institute of Art, is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
Look Again... Stories of the World
All the portraits in this display have been created by students aged between 16 and 21. They are studying a wide range of subjects, not necessarily art, at Sixth Form and Further Education colleges across London. None of the students come from academic backgrounds, and all are in receipt of Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA).
The students have been visiting the Courtauld Gallery on a regular basis since June 2010, and also attended a week-long summer school. The object of the exercise was to examine items in the Courtauld's collection to see how identity and image were portrayed before the advent of photography. Each student created a self-portrait, photographed by Marysa Dowling, photographic artist and artist educator.
