The use of children as soldiers is among the most appalling transgressions. A report filed earlier this month by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon directly addressed this issue in the Central African Republic (CAR) covering a two-year period, ending in December 2010. Due to the "sporadic fighting between Government forces and armed groups, prevalent banditry and the extreme poverty of the population", the use of children in "rebel groups and self-defence militias throughout the country continued during the reporting period."
The UN has been active in the area trying to demobilize children from these positions through the efforts of "UNICEF and its implementing partners." In 2009 and 2010, they were able to extract over 1000 children from conflict situations, 525 of which were "reunited with their families and communities and received reintegration support."
A detail missing from this report is the age range of these children, which include boys and girls. While reports of "indiscriminately" murdered and maimed children, aged 12 to 15, are documented, there is no mention of the age of child soldiers in the CAR.
