Election 2010 was a sight to behold. With wave after wave of voter sentiment delivered at the polls, the balance of power has shifted as the Washington machine is flooded with Republicans. But, did it change anything? When it comes to expectations, we should learn two things from the Indonesians.
First Lesson: If allowed, tough times can foster productive unity.
According to a United Nations press release dated August 19, 2009, the devastation caused by the December 26, 2004 Indonesian tsunami brought unity to the Aceh province, ending “a conflict which had lasted 70 years,” as the government and civil agencies were forced to work together. As a result, there is better infrastructure today and a new law to handle disaster management.
Second Lesson: The best of plans are useless without effective execution.
The decisive action taken after the 2004 tsunami was of little help on October 25, 2010 when they were hit again. It appears the early warning system that was completed with German help in 2008 - as a result of the 2004 tsunami - had already fallen into disrepair and failed to work, according to Achmad Ibrahim and Slamet Riyadi of AP News in an October 27, 2010 article titled “ Death toll in Indonesian tsunami, volcano tops 300.”
